Chateau Vrai
Caillou 2005/2006 The Pommier Family AOC Bordeaux Superieur |
Bordeaux Superieur: The red wines of Bordeaux Superieur, an appellation for wines originating on the north bank of the Garonne River in the area known as "Entre-Deux-Mers" to the east of Bordeaux, put many Bordeaux wines to shame. The Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot vineyards thrive in the sunny, clay-limestone soils. The resulting wines are balanced and complex. Vineyards were first planted in this region during the Roman times and have continued to be an economic mainstay to today. Cépages: Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon. These wines are largely Merlot-dominated making a wine that is great for drinking today as well as having supple tannins that allow the wine to mature to create a fabulous wine in about six years. About the Producer: Centuries ago, this was known as Château Caillou, but a newer Château Caillou (in Sauternes) "stole" the Caillou name. Thus this estate became Vrai Caillou - "the true Caillou". Old grudges die slowly in Bordeaux . Five generations of the Pommier Family have been producing wine on 80 hectares (about 200 acres) of vineyard. They use traditional methods of vinification. Philippe deMeillac, the current generation to steward this vineyard, is an incredibly talented vigneron, receiving recognition for his exceptional wines. Tasting Notes : Everything the Bordeaux wines are known for - an elegantly traditional Bordeaux wine. Caillou has an enchanting bouquet of ripe cherry and black currant fruits enhanced by hints of violets, vanilla, herbs, earth and spice. Supple and smooth on the palate, it has exquisitely pure, ripe cherry and blackberry fruit flavors with subtle herbal and earthy elements. It is round andplump, with luscious fruit concentration. The balance is impeccable.
Recommended Food Pairings: Lamb, steak, stews and casserole Awards: An exceptional wine, the 2005 Vrai Caillou was awarded the Gold Medal in 2007 at Bordeaux's VinExpo. See also from this producer: Chateau Jeanguillon - |
