Engelheim
is the site of one of Charlemagne's castles from which he governed
the Franks. By the year 800 there were already over 100 wine
villages in Alsace. Today Engelheim appears to be a sleepy town,
surrounded by vine-covered hillsides of the Vosges that produce
these exceptional Alsatian wines. It is the limestone/clay
soil that is responsible for the quality of Alsatian wines. It is
the character of Alsace that is responsible for the robust nature
of its wines.
Alsatian
Wines stand out among whites - they represent dry
wines that are powerful, bold and dramatic because they are made
according to a simple philosophy: a wine should be the purest possible
expression of a grape varietal and the soil in which it was
grown. Alsatian wines are sought after for their unusual combination
of lively acidity, dryness, and unhampered, uninhibited, unleashed
fruit - making them fabulous partners for food.

About
the Producer: Julien Schaal became a winemaker
as a result of passion - as opposed to family background.
Julien apprenticed with a number of the world's foremost winemakers
for several years before introducing his own wines. Upon returning
to Alsace, he pursued a single goal: to produce
wines with voluptuous fruit that reflect his passion. His cellars
are located in the center of the Golden Crown vineyard - a unique
geological area offering a variety of soils, including clay, limestone
and sandstone. For Julien, each different terroir
brings an added dimension to his wine.
Tasting
Notes : In the glass, this wine is a pale yellow
green. The aromas are attractive and complex: sweet, floral, honeysuckle,
woodruff, and tropical aromas with suggestions of peach, apricot,
citrus, pineapple, grapefruit. The palate is greeted by pleasant,
sweet-tart, off-dry flavors; excellent
balance; long, faintly bitter finish. Its flavors are expressive
and long, well-structured and full.
Recommended
Food Pairings : This is an astoundingly versatile
wine. Pairs happily with assorted of cheeses and ripe fruits,
fish and salads. Rieslings love to show their fragrance and delicacy
as well as their versatility. |
